Iran demarcates border with Afghanistan

The Iranian Defense Ministry has sponsored a major demarcation project to secure the country's border with neighboring Afghanistan.

 The Iranian Defense Ministry has sponsored a major demarcation project to secure the country's border with neighboring Afghanistan.
 
 According to a statement released by the Defense Ministry, 709 km of land and 236 km of water border between the two countries will be demarcated.
 
 This is the first time the border is being demarcated over the past 100 years.
 
 The project aims to promote security by fighting drugs smuggling into Iran.
 
 It will also have economic benefits and will encourage development in both countries, the statement added. The project is estimated to cost over 3.2 million dollars.
 
 The demarcation will be registered by the United Nations after completion, according to the statement.
