New York, April 21, IRNA – Iranian Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli called for more active role of the United Nations (UN) to restore sustainable peace and security as well as balanced development and removal of poverty throughout the world.
'Today the people in remote parts of the world are waiting for the UN's active role in restoring peace and sustainable security in the world and the Islamic Republic of Iran as an effective member of the UN is ready for any cooperation with the international body to reach this big goal,' Rahmani Fazli said in a meeting with Head of the UN General Assembly Mogens Lyketof in New York on Thursday.
The interior minister called for UN's more effective and serious cooperation to fight the drug traffickers, and underlined the need for cooperation among Balkan countries and their cooperation with Iran in anti-narcotics fields through tracking the financial resources and fighting money-laundering as well as finding the smuggling routes and arresting the international traffickers.
Rahmani Fazli, meantime, pointed to the plans for finding an alternative for poppy cultivation in Afghanistan for the Afghan people to make the ends meet.
The UN General Assembly chief, for his part, appreciated Iran for its efforts in fighting drug trafficking, and said, 'The document on joint commitment for fighting drug trafficking has been approved which is a positive thing.'
'Confronting the threat of terrorism as an international phenomenon need joint actions of all countries; all countries should do their best to prevent the ordinary people join these terrorist groups,' Lyketof said.
