Vienna, Dec 14, IRNA – The rate of narcotics prevalence in Iran is lower than its global rate, says the Islamic Republic interior minister.

'The figure is four percent lower than its global rate,' Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) Sunday evening.

Rahmani Fazli is in the Austrian capital at the invitation of Yury Fedotov, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

'We hope to implement policies set by the Supreme Leader and for the Sixth Plan of Development we will try to lower the number of addicted people by 25 percent, that is, five percent annually,' he said.

On his invitation by the UNODC, Rahmani Fazli said that Iran and the United Nations are due to sign a cooperation document.

'This is going to be the fourth cooperation document signed between Iran and the UNODC, and on its basis, the United Nations is going to compensate for part of the expenses needed to fight drugs,' he said.

The resources expected to be provided by the UN is estimated at 20 million dollars, the interior minister added.
