I.R.Iran supports The UNODC Regional Programme for Afghanistan and Neighbouring Countries

4 August 2015 –Drug Control Headquarters senior official met with the senior management team of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Regional Programme for Afghanistan and Neighbouring Countries in Tehran. 

The main objective of the meeting was for Regional Programme to update the Iranian national counterparts on the main achievements of this programme during its first phase (2011-2015) and for the DCHQ and MFA to share their comments and proposals for the second phase of the programme (2016-2019).

The meeting was inaugurated with a brief introduction by Mr. Mohammad Narimani, head of the DCHQ Bilateral Office and was continued by Dr. Afshar’s remarks with regard to the Drug Demand Reduction challenges. In His notes, Dr. Afshar, Deputy for the Drug Demand Reduction and Public Participation Office of the DCHQ emphasized on the need for regional and international cooperation to address the drug problem. 

Addressing the senior management team of the Regional Programme for Afghanistan and Neighbouring Countries, Mr. Asadolah Hadinejad, Deputy for the Drug Supply Reduction Office of the DCHQ explained that the major problem is drug cultivation and added that there is a need for further support in controlling custom offices.

Dr. Jeremy Milsom, Senior Coordinator of the UNODC Regional Programme for Afghanistan and Neighbouring Countries shared major achievements of the Regional programme during the past four years and commended the efforts of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the field of Drug Supply and Demand Reduction. In this regard, UNODC Iran Representative, Mr. Leik Boonwaat also praised the role of the Iranian government in combating drug problems. 

On the closing notes, Mr. Mohammad Narimani, concluded that The Islamic Republic of Iran as a partner to the RP believes that in order to combat the global scourge of illicit drugs, multidimensional measures must be planned in proportionate with the nature of the problem with the participation of all beneficiaries based on the principle of common and shared responsibility and welcomes the extension of Regional programme until 2019.
