The UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan warned further increase of illicit opiate cultivation and production in Afghanistan

TEHRAN, 21 February 2015 - The UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Nicholas Haysom, visiting Iran, met with Drug Control Headquarters Acting Secretary General, Dr. Alireza Jazini, on Saturday.

Mr. Haysom expressed the year 2014 the worst year due to increase of illicit poppy cultivation and opiate production in Afghanistan. He appreciated the I.R. Iran for most effective balanced and comprehensive measures on drug problem and emphasized on the comprehensive strategy for Afghanistan to be considered by the UN Agencies in particular UNODC, too.

DCHQ Acting Secretary General Dr. Jazini, while expressing deep concern on afghan opiate requested UN to prioritize alternative livelihood program in Afghanistan as the determinative factor to curb the world drug problem. He concluded the drug problem still remains a world problem which should be addressed by international community as the principle of common and shared responsibility.
