World community supports fight against drug-trafficking: Official

Islamabad, Jan 28, IRNA – Deputy Secretary-General of Iran's Headquarter for fight against drug-trafficking said on Wednesday that world community must help carry out development plans to support livelihood in Afghanistan and 

In the regional meeting of combat against drug-trafficking, hosted by Islamabad, on Wednesday, Alireza Jazini said that in spite of all efforts and actions by Afghanistan government, because of lack of efficiency of the development plans or other decisions of the world community, especially western governments in Afghanistan, and upon report of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for the fourth consecutive year, cultivation and production of narcotics in Afghanistan have increased noticeably.

He added that the growth of poppy cultivation has intensified trend of drug trafficking, deepening connection between organized crimes groups in the region and beyond region and finally imposing more casualties and financial damages on countries of the region.

He said that by understanding the current situation, including production increase and escalation of drug trafficking from common borders of Afghanistan and Pakistan into Iran's borders, Iran implements its international obligations to confront the global issue and in execution of its balanced strategy which means decrease in demand and decline in supply and promotion of regional and international cooperation as its priority.

Jazini stressed that strengthening regional cooperation mechanism in the field of border control management and exchanging operational information, including trilateral initiative, between Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan should be more supported by the global community and other related regional and international bodies.

He also announced second international meeting at ministerial level to be held in Tehran on February 16, 2015.

Regional meeting on fight drug-trafficking is underway in Islamabad, capital of Pakistan, on Tuesday and Wednesday.
