Steering Committee Meeting Regional Programme for Afghanistan and Neighboring countries: RERV09- Sub-programme 3: "Prevention and Treatment of Addiction among Vulnerable Groups”

The meeting commenced on 24 August 2014, at the DCHQ by introducing the new coordinator of the regional programme welcoming him by Ambassador mahmood Bayat Director General of International Relations office of the DCHQ The meeting was continued by reviewing the below envisaged activities under the RERV09 work plan – workplan of the Sub-programme 3 of the regional programme, by Mr. Rehman


Activities in the area of prevention
FAST (Family and School Together) programme was mentioned as an effective programme in area of prevention with an outstanding successful piloting phase in Iran. In this context, Mr. Rehman stated that in the evaluation report of the piloting phase of the FAST in the Islamic Republic of Iran, participation rate by the families has been reported as 86% which shows the exceptional level of the commitment and efficiency of the programme. He further added that the UNODC Regional Programme (RP) is willing to support scaling up of this programme at country level, moreover envisaging organization of a study tour for the UNODC RP focal points to the Islamic Republic of Iran aiming to share experience of the successful implementation of this programme.

Following the above mentioned, Mr. Rehman raised the request of the Rad NGO for prevention training. He further explained that this NGO is working with people living with disabilities and approached UNODC RP for assistance in training trainers in prevention area.
The above mentioned activities in the field of prevention were welcomed by Director General ofInternational Relations office of the DCHQ and received preliminary clearance.

Activities in the area of treatment:
In the area of treatment, Mr. Rehman emphasised on the importance of supporting the newly born Regional Network of NGOs in the field of drug demand reduction by UNODC and DCHQ. He further added that RP will support the presence of this network at the next CND meeting.

Mr. Rehman further added that the RP is planning to support the 8th International Congress on Addiction Science which will be held at Iran Medical University in Tehran during September 10-12 by covering the translation costs.

The coordinator of the SP3 of the RP further added that Iran will take a lead in the framework of the RP in developing curricula for treatment of addiction by collecting the best experience and knowledge at the regional level by organizing a workshop.

The above mentioned activities in the field of treatment were well received by Director General of International Relations office of the DCHQ, only with regard to the development of the curricula, Director General of this office suggested that a round table to be held instead of a workshop.

Activities in the area of HIV prevention and treatment:
With regard to the HIV prevention and treatment field, the coordinator of the SP3 explained that the RP in Iran is supporting four DIC in cities of Tehran (Shahr-e-Rey and Vramin) and Mashad (Nodeh and Golshahr) for provision of comprehensive harm reduction and treatment services to Afghans who are residing in Iran.
