TEHRAN (FNA)- Head of Iran's Customs Office Massoud Karbasian and Representative of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Tehran Leik Boonwaat in a meeting on Saturday underlined the necessity for increasing cooperation between the two sides in fighting crimes and drug trafficking.

During the meeting today, Boonwaat praised Iran’s efforts in the war on drug trafficking, and called on the country to increase mutual cooperation in fighting money-laundering, goods smuggling, organized crimes, bribery, forgery and bioterrorism.

Karbasian, for his part, elaborated on the activities of the Customs Office's center for fighting organized crimes, and said the Office has succeeded in discovering and seizing 113,000 liters of chemicals used in the production of illicit drugs and 1,764kg of traditional and chemically-produced drugs.

In the meeting, the two officials also agreed to increase their cooperation in fighting crimes and drug trafficking.

According to the UNODC World Drug Report 2013, Iran accounted for the highest rate of opium seizures (80 percent) as well as heroin seizures (30 percent) in the world this year.

According to official estimates, Iran's battle against drugs cost the country around $1 billion annually. Strategies pursued by Tehran include digging canals, building barriers and installing barbed wire to seal the country's borders, specially in the East.
