UN Envoy Praises Iran's High Drug Combat Capabilities

Representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Iran Antonio De Leo said that the international community recognizes Iran's high capabilities in anti-narcotic efforts.

"Iran is considered as a leading country in campaign against organized crimes, including narcotics, in a way that the UN considers Iran as its strategic partner," De Leo said, addressing a regional conference in Tehran on Tuesday.

He said that Iran has been the number one state in drug discovery in the last three years, and stated, "Right now, the international community recognizes the Iranian police (performance) in area of campaign against drugs and the UNODC is seeking to increase the level of its coordination with the Iranian police."

In relevant remarks in June, Commander of the anti-narcotics squad of Iran's Law Enforcement Police General Ali Moayyedi urged all the regional countries to join Iran in the campaign against drug production and trafficking.

General Moayyedi expressed the hope that Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan through their close cooperation would be able to eliminate the menace of drug trafficking from the region.

Iran lies on a major drug route between Afghanistan and Europe, as well as the Persian Gulf states. Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Iranian police have lost more than 3720 of their personnel in the country's combat against narcotics.

According to official estimates, Iran's battle against drugs cost the country around $1 billion annually. Strategies pursued by Tehran include digging canals, building barriers and installing barbed wire to seal the country's borders, specially in the East.
